ASIC Form 484: Change to Company Details

ASIC Form 484 (Change to Company Details) is the form you lodge with ASIC when something about a registered company changes — its address, its officeholders, or its share structure. It must be lodged within 28 days of the change. There is no lodgement fee if you are on time, and late fees apply if you are not.

If your SMSF has a corporate trustee, that trustee is a company — so Form 484 is the form you will use whenever the people or details behind it change.

This is ASIC’s current published version of the form. Most changes can also be lodged online, which is faster and gives you immediate confirmation — see “How to lodge” below.

What Form 484 covers

Form 484 is a single form with several sections. You complete only the sections relevant to your change.

Section Use it for
Change of address Registered office, or principal place of business
Officeholder appointment Appointing a new director or company secretary
Officeholder cessation A director or secretary resigning or being removed
Officeholder details Correcting or updating an existing officeholder’s name or address
Share changes Issuing, cancelling or transferring shares
Member details Changing the name or address of a shareholder

Some changes are not made on Form 484 — a company name change, a change of company type, or a change to the annual review date each use their own form.

When an SMSF corporate trustee needs Form 484

These are the situations we see most often with SMSF clients:

  • A member joins the fund. Every member of an SMSF must be a director of the corporate trustee, so a new member means appointing a new director — and notifying ASIC within 28 days.
  • A member leaves, or passes away. The director must cease, and ASIC must be told. This one is commonly missed during an already difficult period.
  • A trustee moves house. Officeholder residential addresses are held by ASIC and must be kept current.
  • The registered office changes. Often when a fund changes accountant or administrator.
  • Shares in the trustee company change hands. Usually alongside a membership change.

Each of these is a separate 28-day clock. If a member joins and the registered office moves in the same month, both need lodging.

The 28-day deadline, and what happens if you miss it

The 28 days runs from the date of the change, not the date you noticed it or the date the paperwork was signed. Lodge within that window and there is no fee.

Lodge late and ASIC charges a late fee on a two-tier scale — one amount for documents up to one month late, a higher amount beyond that. ASIC reviews these amounts each financial year, so check the current figures on ASIC’s late fees page before assuming a number.

Late fees are payable by the company, not by ASIC’s discretion, and they are not usually waived. Keeping the dates tidy is cheaper than fixing them afterwards.

How to lodge

There are three routes:

  1. Online, through ASIC Connect. Fastest, and you get confirmation straight away. You need the company’s corporate key.
  2. Through a registered ASIC agent. Your accountant or SMSF administrator lodges on the company’s behalf. No corporate key needed, and the agent keeps a record of what was lodged and when.
  3. By post, using the PDF above. Slowest, and you carry the risk of it arriving outside the 28 days.

Form 484 may be lodged by a company officeholder, a registered agent or authorised lodger, or a liquidator.

Common mistakes

  • Counting from the wrong date. The clock starts at the change itself.
  • Updating the fund but not the company. Telling the ATO about an SMSF membership change does not notify ASIC about the trustee company. They are separate obligations.
  • Using a residential address as the registered office without the occupier’s written consent.
  • Forgetting the share transfer. When a member leaves, their shares in the trustee company usually need to move as well.
  • Lodging the wrong form. A company name change is not a Form 484.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a fee to lodge Form 484?

No, provided it is lodged within 28 days of the change. Late lodgement attracts a late fee.

Can I lodge Form 484 online?

Yes. Most Form 484 changes can be lodged through ASIC Connect using the company’s corporate key, or by a registered ASIC agent on your behalf.

What if I have lost the corporate key?

ASIC can reissue it to the company’s registered office address. Allow time for this — it does not stop the 28-day clock.

Do I need Form 484 if only the SMSF changes, not the company?

Not necessarily. If the fund’s membership changes, the corporate trustee’s directors almost always change too, and that does require Form 484. If nothing about the company changes, it does not.

How long does ASIC take to process it?

Online lodgement is usually reflected immediately. Paper lodgement takes longer and depends on post.

We can lodge it for you

If we administer your SMSF with a corporate trustee, we handle Form 484 lodgements as part of keeping the fund compliant — director appointments and cessations, address changes and share transfers — and we track the 28-day deadlines so they are not missed.

Get in touch if you have a change coming up, or if you have discovered one that is already overdue. Late is fixable; ignored is expensive.
